Pet First Aid

The aim of the Pet First Aid course is to teach individuals basic first aid techniques for dogs and cats due to common illness, injury, or a life-threatening condition.

Purpose: To teach individuals basic first aid techniques for dogs and cats due to common illness, injury, or a life-threatening condition.

Participants are advised that the Pet First Aid course is designed to teach you how keep your pet safe and secure until you are able to reach veterinary assistance.

Prerequisites: None

Learning Objectives: Participants should be able to:

  • Explain how and when to call for emergency assistance for an injured pet
  • Understand how to find out what is “normal” for their pet
  • Identify signals of breathing emergencies, including choking, and demonstrate how to provide care
  • Identify signals of cardiac arrest and demonstrate how to provide care
  • Identify life-threatening bleeding and demonstrate how bleeding can be controlled
  • Identify signals of various injuries and demonstrate how to care for them
  • Identify signals of sudden illness, including poisoning, seizures, and heat and cold emergencies, and describe how to care for them
  • Describe when and how to move an injured pet
  • Describe components of a good “pet friendly” first aid kit

Length: Five(5) – Six (6) hours {dependent on number of participants doing practical aspects}

 

Certification: Each participant will receive an American Red Cross Pet First Aid certificate.

Participant Materials: Participants will receive a Cat First Aid manual and DVD & a Dog First Aid manual and DVD.

Bring to Class: Participants should bring pen, paper and a stuffed cat or dog for practice.

** No live animals are allowed to participate in this program due to unknown stressors our pets may feel or encounter due to the number of humans and other animals. American Red Cross and Insignia College feel that keeping your pets out of harm’s way is the first step in keeping them healthy and happy.

Cost: $150 – Cancellation Policy: $40 administrative fee for client cancellations.
